He is survived by: his wife Gloria H. Villarreal; his children, Cecilia Villarreal Salazar (Danny) and Juan Jose Villarreal Jr.; his grandchildren, Camerin Salazar and Addison Salazar; and his sister Diamantina Serna. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews.
