He was predeceased by : his wife Dorothy. He is survived by : his father Edwin Flato (Lydia); his children, Andrew, Nick, Nicholas and Katherine; his mother Virginia Joplin (Jim); his siblings, Monica Etter (David) and Franklin Flato (Claudia); his half-siblings, Edwin Flato and Rebecca Flato; his mother-in-law Nancy Zinsmeister (Sandy); and his nieces and nephews, William Zinsmeister, John Zinsmeister, Grace Flato, William Flato, Andrew Etter and Anne Marie Wallace. He is also survived by his grandfather, father, and his children.

In lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the John K. Flato Children's Fund for their educations.
