She was loved and cherished by many people including: her adoptive mother Alma Saunders Walker; her husband James Edward Tatum, Sr.; her daughter Charhonda "Mysti" Tatum (Thong) of Fort Worth, Texas; her parents, Ira, Sr. Mathews and Vera Mathews; her siblings, Ira Mathews, Jr., Sheryl Newson and Helen Mathews Thompson (Lennard); her grandchildren, Ambria Tatum and Takeo Matthew Chakrathouk; her siblings' children, Chris Mathews and Zoey Kennington; and her aunts, Hazel Cobb and Geneva Edwards.
Betty received her religious foundation after being baptized at the Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church of Lorena under the pastorage of Reverend J. C. Campbell.
