He was predeceased by : his parents, Otto Serr and Sophia Serr (Metz); his wife Beverly Wenzel; his siblings, Leona Schumann (Gilbert), Margaret Serr, Hulda Serr, Herman Serr (Katherine), Edison Serr (Rosemary), Willis Serr (Ruth) and Carl Serr (Phyllis); and also, Harold and Laura Wenzel (Schlesinger).

He is survived by : his son Brian Serr; his daughter-in-law Kathy Serr (George); and his granddaughters, Grace Serr, Olivia Serr and Sophia Serr.

Memorials in honor of Ernie may be made to Lutheran World Relief or to Shepherd's Way (a Wichita, Kansas-based ministry dedicated to launching adults with disabilities into independent, community-engaged, and purpose-driven lives).
