He was predeceased by : his parents, Cecil Carpenter and Delores Carpenter (Downen); his wife Sharon; his daughter Tammy Shadis; his grandson AJ Shadis; and his brothers-in-law, Tim Wilson and Ronald Trusty.

He is survived by : his sons, Jeff Carpenter (Sharon) and Craig Carpenter (Tammy); his brother Terry Carpenter (Julie); and his siblings-in-law, Rick Wilson (Jackie), Brad Wilson (Dawn), Neal Wilson (Susan), Marsha Wilson and Carolyn Trusty. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.
