He was predeceased by: his parents, Lincoln Earl and O'Dell Marie Carter Washington; his brothers, Johnny Pendleton, Archie B. Carter, Wayne Alfonso Washington and James Gregory Washington; his son Jeffrey Dewayne Washington; his sister Vera Denise Washington; and his grandson Xavier Dean Washington.
He is survived by: his siblings, Henry Lee Pendleton, Thomas L. Pendleton, Lewis Charles Washington (Marie) and Patricia Ann Washington Gude (Dan); his former wife Iris Washington; his sons, Walter Dean Washington Jr. and Robert Earl Washington; and his grandchildren, Jay'tun Washington, Jaidence Washington, Nicholas Childress Mims and Jamie Lorraine Corsey. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Walter made the decision to donate his body to UT Southwestern University to further research to help those with diabetes and congestive heart failure.
