He was predeceased by: his parents, Steven Emerson Kirkland and Mary Evelyn Temples; and his son Dirk Herbert Kirkland. He is survived by: his wife Nina Isom Kirkland; and his children, Neidra Merrill, Lonnie Braby (Mark), Hylan Kirkland II (Elizabeth), Amanda Young (Anthony) and Kassie Pitts (Bryan). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a plethora of brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
