He was predeceased by: his parents, James Clay Harris and Viola McGuire; his wife Dorothy Maxine DeHart McGuire; his son Walter Samuel "Sammy" Pyrtle, Jr.; and his siblings, Merit "Bill" McGuire, Mike Harris and Edna Bridges.
He is survived by: his children, Susan Moore of Eden, NC, Jan McGuire-Starke (George) of Axton, VA, James "Chuck" McGuire, Jr. of New Bern, Brian Keith McGuire of Axton, VA, Marie Ward (Jimmy) of Eden, Sandra Corns (David) of Horsepasture, VA and Lynne Cherry (Bill) of Ridgeway, VA; and his sister Cathy Harris. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
