She was predeceased by : her parents, Henry Elbert Smythers (E. Lee) and Virginia Dare Williams Smythers (Stewart); and her former life partner Dr. Basil Jackson Friend. She is survived by : her children, Basil Jackson Friend II (Annette Suarez) of Chester, VA and Virginia Lee Friend (Jenny); her husband Alberto Mena Chacon of Charlottesville, VA; her foster son Harvey Sexton of Galax, VA.; and her grandchildren, Jasmine Mansfield, Jade Dihr, Creighton, Sierra Suarez Friend and Gisselle Sexton (Amy).
