He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Haines and Mary Martin Haines; his former wife Mary Ellen White Haines; his wife Hazel Merchant Baggarly Haines; his brother Thomas Haines Jr.; his stepbrother Preston Haines; his sisters, Rosalie Oates, Frances Garber and Erma Bowman; and his stepsister Elsie Roberson.
He is survived by: his sons, Robert Haines Jr., Donald Lee Haines (Polly), Larry E. Haines (Lisa) and Charles F. Haines (Nancy); his sister Ruby Jane Landis; and his grandsons, Mark Haines, Brian Haines, Chuck Haines, Alan Haines, Matthew Haines and Caleb Haines. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild on the way and numerous nieces and nephews.
