He was predeceased by : his parents, Roy Hanks and Linnie Farmer Hanks; his son Blake Hanks; and his siblings, Barbara Jean McKenzie and Charles Hanks.

He is survived by : his wife Virginia Burcham Hanks of Galax; his children, Jennifer (David Pearson), Teresa Young of Galax and Timothy; his daughter-in-law Tina Hanks of Galax; his stepdaughter Linda (Gary Manning) of Ohio; his siblings, Emily (George Wright), Beverly (Frank Fredrick), Virginia, Darlene (Michael Mulqueeny) and David; and his sister-in-law Kathé Hanks of Galax.
