He was predeceased by: his siblings, Janice and David; and his parents, Robert Bernard and Georgia Inez Black Dowling. He is survived by: his son Swanson Gregory (Amy); his granddaughter Autumn Sophia Dowling of Huntington; his daughter Stephanie Dowling (Dwight Barry) of Jefferson, Maryland.; and his brother Robert Buford (Rosalyn Dowling) of Locust Grove. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia State Police Association or the Alzheimer's Association.
