He was predeceased by: his parents, Rev. Robert L. Petty, Sr. and Ellen D. Petty; and his sisters, Ruth Petty of Baltimore, MD and Lorraine Petty of Atlanta, GA.. He is survived by: his children, Robert, III and Tawn; his wife Betty; his grandchildren, Nafiz and Taneeya; his great grandchildren, Soliz and Nixson; his siblings, Marshal Petty, Cecilia P. Harris, Francis Petty and Amy Petty; and his brothers-in-law, Melvin Tune (Barbara) and Floyd Alexander.
