He was predeceased by: his wife Christine G. McWhirt; his son George B. McWhirt III; his sister Evelyn M. Balderson; and his parents, George B. McWhirt and Leithie O. McWhirt.
He is survived by: his daughter Bettina M. McWhirt of Stafford County; his sister Loretta M. Shelton of Stafford County; and his brothers-in-law, Vincent "Butch" Gracik of Falmouth and Richard J. Abbott of Richmond. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
