With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of Lawrence B. Wood Jr. (Newport News, Virginia), whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on May 24, 2025 at the age of 87. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
In the sacred silence of farewell, Lawrence is released into the embrace of eternity, knowing that his light will continue to shine brightly in the tapestry of the lives of his loved ones. And as his memory is carried forward, may comfort be found in the knowledge that love is eternal, and that Lawrence's spirit lives on in the beauty that surrounds us.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Margaret Ann Patrick Wood and Lawrence Barron Wood. He is survived by: his significant other Ann Payne Wood of Newport News, VA.; his children, W. Gregory (Kathie Wood) of Rehobeth, DE, Bryan (Kim Wood) of Yorktown, VA and Lauren Wood Walsh (Davey Mabe) of Wilmington, NC.; his sister Ann Wood Carneal of Baltimore, MD.; and his grandchildren, Zachary Wood of Annapolis, MD, Caitlin Wood of Lewes, DE and Chloe.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 21st 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Pope Chapel at Christopher Newport University (1 Avenue of the Arts, Newport News, VA 23606).
As a member of the Hampton Rotary Club, he received the Paul Harris Fellow award, recognizing both his outstanding record of achievement as University faculty member and administrator, as well as his major contributions to the community and civic endeavors.
