He was predeceased by: his wife Donna Petty; and his parents, Roger Petty and Francine Petty. He is survived by: his children, Darren Petty and Lauren Akers (Josh); his grandson Jensen William-Gene Akers; his siblings, Joyce Brubaker and R. Scott Petty (Kathy); and his pets, Mary and Nibblet. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to NPR (National Public Radio).
