He was predeceased by: his parents, Harrison Whipple and Clara Whipple; his son Rick Whipple; and his brothers, Marvin and Marcus.

He is survived by: his wife Ruth Bohner Whipple; his children, Doug Surber (Karen) and Denise Pollock (Don); and his grandchildren, Greg Surber, Phil Surber, Ryan Pollock, Jessica Pollock, Sam, Charlie and Johanna Whipple.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Roanoke Valley SPCA.
