He was predeceased by : his parents, Charlie Gates and Georgia Gates; his brothers, Stanley and Harvey Gates; and his brother-in-law Roy Harris.

He is survived by : his wife Shirley W. Gates; his siblings, Goldie Gates Harris of Ceres, Cecil Gates (Elaine) of Littlestown and Bill Gates (Anita) of Hanover; his siblings-in-law, Bill Wyrick of Bristol Tn, Jackie Gates of Rural Retreat and Brenda Wyrick of Bristol; and his close friend Brian Simons. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
