He was predeceased by : his parents, James Edward and Blanche Kitchen Mitchell; his granddaughter Bess Terry; and his siblings, Edward, Charles Lee and Margaret.

He is survived by : his wife Hope Harrison Mitchell; and his daughters, Vernona M. Smith (John), Evelyn R. Mitchell, Janet M. Reames (Mel) and Betsy M. Smith (Joe). He is also survived by nine grandchildren (four spouses), nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Concord United Methodist Church, c/o Alice Spiers, 25713 Courthouse Rd., Stony Creek, Virginia 23882 or to Dinwiddie Animal Shelter, 10903 Wheelers Pond Rd, Dinwiddie, Virginia 23841.
