He was predeceased by : his parents, Beulah Chalkley and Alvin Swepson Butterworth Jr.. He is survived by : his wife Maria Ruiz Butterworth; his daughters, Amanda Butterworth Bessette (Jeff) and Lindsey Butterworth Langston (Danny); his grandchildren, Caleb, Brendan, Merrick, Logan and Riley; and his siblings, Linda Carol Butterworth and Alvin Swepson Butterworth III (Carolyn).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to one of two missions that were close to Carey's heart: Redeeming Africa (redeemingafrica.org); The Ezra Project (ezraproject.org).
