He was predeceased by: his parents, Francis Schmit and Teanie Schmit; his grandson JonSteven Ruley, Jr.; his stepdaughter Samantha Lehr; and his brother Allen Schmit.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Schmit (Sam); his children, Renee Schmit of Monroe, William Schmit (Janet) of Phoenix, Lisa Young (Monte) of Ferndale, Shannon Menks of Seattle and Natalie Legg (Mike) of Falls Church, Virginia.; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Tiffany), Stephannie, Randall (Simona), Joshua, Jeremy, Angela (Robert), Diskin, Hannah, Colton, Timothy, Mallory, Logan, Gavin, Lorelie and Nathan; and his great grandchildren, William, Hailey, Anderson, Ellowyn, Everett, Elizabelle, Olyvia and Hayden.
