He was predeceased by: his parents, John Schmitz and Elizabeth Schmitz (Ritsche); his wife Margaret 'Peg'; and his siblings, Gertrude Moriak (Frank), John Schmitz and Jerome Schmitz.
He is survived by: his children, Mary Matz of Hudson, Peter Schmitz (Karen) of South Lyon, MI, Ann Michaud (Fran) of Scandia, MN and Mike Schmitz (Tammy) of Eau Claire; his grandchildren, Jennifer Matz, Katie Wright (Lorne), Amy Kellerman (Sam), Jeff Schmitz (Roxy), Ryan Schmitz, Justin Schmitz, Meghan Flynn (Carson), Ben Schmitz, Carrie Schmitz and Jason Schmitz; his great grandchildren, Kayla, Jack Wright, Parker and Annie Kellerman; his sister Mary Ann Nelson (Allen) of LaCrosse; and his sisters-in-law, Joann Schmitz of Clayton and Kay Schmitz of Maryland. He is also survived by his sons, friends and other relatives.
