He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles Schmidt and Anna Schmidt (Huckstadt); his former spouse Georgene Bernhard; his siblings, Gloria and Carl Schmidt; and his sister-in-law Vergean Schmidt.
He is survived by: his wife Joyce Klug; his sons, Tom Schmidt (Laura) of La Crosse, David Schmidt (Bobbie) of Marana, AZ. and Jim Schmidt (Mary) of Naperville, IL.; his grandchildren, Jeff Schmidt (Becky) of Madison, WI., Sarah Gilbert (Anthony), Alex Schmidt (Erin) of Madison, Billy Schmidt (Tanya) of Naperville, IL. and Eva Schmidt of Naperville, IL.; his sister-in-law Beverly Mazuk (Bill); his great grandchildren, Sydelle Schmidt, Ellis and Adler Roland; his stepchildren, Rick Klug of North Carolina, Nancy Nelson (Randy) of La Crosse, Mary Esser (Dan) of Eitzen, MN. and Deb Klug of La Crosse; and his stepgrandchildren, Nicole Klug of La Crosse, Keith Klug of Madison, Shawn Nelson of La Crosse, Meranda Keil (Kevin) of Holmen and Devon Kruse of Eitzen.
Memorials may be given to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2135 Weston Street, La Crosse or to the William & Georgene Schmidt Scholarship in Education-UW-La Crosse Foundation.
