Leila Hentzen Smith Obituary
Leila Hentzen Smith, beloved matriarch, artist, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on August 7, 2024. She was 92 years old. Daughter of Erwin Albert and Marian Leila (Austin) Hentzen. Leila was born in Milwaukee in 1932 and lived a life rich with creativity, joy, and love. A graduate of Miami University, she earned her bachelor's degree in Fine Arts laying the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to her artistic passions. Leila's paintings, many of which reflect the vibrant scenes from her numerous riverboat trips with her husband down the Mississippi River, are a testament to her artistic spirit and connection to the beauty in nature. She found joy traveling across the country to art fairs, teaching art classes in her home studio, quilting, and spending summers at her cottage on Loon Lake.
Leila was a member of many genealogical societies, being a descendent of Charlemagne, the Plantagenet Kings of England, Magna Carta barons, 10 of the passengers of the Mayflower and 22 revolutionary war soldiers.
Leila is survived by her son-in-law, Mark Lotten, grandchildren Julie (Andrew) Schwerke, Andrea Lotten, Christopher (Ashton) Lotten, Anthony (Claire) Lotten, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Richard H. Smith.
A celebration of Leila's life will be held at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home-Mequon on Thursday, August 15, 2024 from 2:30pm until time of service at 4:00pm. Leila's memory will continue to inspire all who knew her, and her art will remain as a vibrant reminder of a life well lived.
