He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Hernstine and Pauline Hernstine (Schrader); his siblings, Frank, Hiram "Hi", John and Joannie; and his pet Sam.

He is survived by: his wife Diane Alshouse; his children, Scott and Kristen Krause (Brad); his grandsons, Alex and Evan Krause; his sisters, Rae Vale (Rod) and Bertie Olmstead (Ralph); and his siblings-in-law, Don Alshouse, Bob Packard, Gail Hernstine, Doris Hernstine and Kathy Kvalheim (Gary). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
