He was predeceased by : his parents, Sam Smits and Martha Dykstra Smits; his sisters, Margaret Cupery (Gerben), Katherine Treptow (Earl) and Bernice Visser (John); his parents-in-law, Andrew and Effie Westra; and his brothers-in-law, Andrew Jr. and Anthony Westra.
He is survived by : his wife Marilyn Smits of Waupun; his children, Dan Smits (Nancy), Diane Posthuma (Randy), Steve Smits (Heidi) and Mark Smits (Andrea); his grandchildren, Danielle Scheuers (Nathaniel), David Smits, Beth Kartechner (Nick), Rachel Regnerus (Jared), Michael Posthuma (Kaitlin), Benjamin Posthuma (Mallary), Alyssa Posthuma, Becca Vree (Mitchell), Breanna Buiter (Drew), Lynnae Franken (Adam), Kaytlin Smits, Landon, Addie and Milan Smits; and his siblings, Beverly Vander Voet (Richard), Ronald Smits (Betty), Ken Smits (Ellen), Glenn Smits (Donna), Peter Westra (Doris), Syros Westra (Janice), Evelyn Minnema (Howard), Mary Westra Greenfield (Dennis) and Betty Westra. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren.
