He was predeceased by : his parents, Pelius Waller Elder and Addie Mae Newell Elder. He is survived by : his wife Angela Dawn Pardue Elder; his son John Thomas Elder, II; his siblings, Michael Elder of Charles Town and Sharon Elder of Charlotte, NC; and his niece Brittany Michelle Elder.
