He was predeceased by: his parents, Elisha J. Grothe, Sr. and Emma Jane Grothe (Steger); his wife Eleanor Grothe (Apple); and his siblings, Betty Hall, Lottie McDonald, Ann Brodbeck, Mary King, Hazel Liff, June Stremmel, Edgar, Charles, Joseph, John and Donald Grothe.
He is survived by: his children, Sarah R. Hahn of Essex, Michael D. Grothe (Debbie) of Berlin, MD, Patrick B. Grothe (Dee) of Essex, Timothy A. Grothe (Peggy) of Frankford, DE and Philip E. Grothe (Angie) of Essex; his stepdaughter Linda Chaney of Florida; his sisters, Leona Rohrbaugh of Hampstead, MD and Beatrice Thomas of Essex; and his close friend Frances Stansberry of Keyser. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
