He was predeceased by: his parents, Effie Davis Herndon and Van R. Herndon, Sr.; his wife Elaine Alderman Herndon; his son Mark Herndon; and his siblings, Robert Herndon, Horace Herndon, Stewart "Doc" Herndon, Van "Buck" Herndon, Jr., Virginia Kidd, Naomi Richey and Lorene Thompson.

He is survived by: his children, Jerry W. Herndon, Jr. (Theresa), Rebecca Vance (Jaimie) and Norma J. Moxley (Ernie). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimers Association.
