He was predeceased by: his parents, James A. Patterson, II and Helen Williams; and his siblings, Rex Patterson and Barbara Bailey. He is survived by: his wife Loretta F. Taylor Patterson; his children, Starla Renee Patterson, Tara Lynn Kinney and James Allen Patterson, IV; his grandchildren, Chelsea Renee Efaw, Alyssa Joe Efaw and Nathaniel Patterson; his sister Nancy Lee Houser; and his pet Hank. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
