He was predeceased by: his father Paul Abernathy; and his brother Clay Abernathy. He is survived by: his wife Stacy; his children, Dr. Brianna Abernathy and Connor Abernathy; his stepson Ethan; and his mother Irene Abernathy.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Kelly's memory.
