He was predeceased by: his parents, Van Abernathy and Lurleen Browning Abernathy; and his siblings, Robert Abernathy, Louis Abernathy, Kenneth Abernathy, Jimmy Abernathy, Van Abernathy, Jr., Willard Abernathy and Ruby Lawler.

He is survived by: his wife Shirley Herron Abernathy; his children, Steve Abernathy (JoLynne), Sandra Gaines (Mike) and Jason Abernathy (Holly); his grandchildren, Adam Hall (Keysha), Josh Hall, Leigh Morrill (Dave), Amy Coleman (Wes), Ryne Abernathy and Cade Abernathy; and his great grandchildren, Eli Morrill, Lillie Morrill, Zeke Morrill, Jake Morrill, Makena Hall, Noah Hall, Carter Sylvester, Oakley Sylvester, Blair Hall, Cannon Hall and Ruby Lynne Coleman.
