He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Tiller Thomas; his son James W. Thomas; his sister Susan Coulter of Huntsville; his nephew Jason B. Thomas (Rhonda) of Athens; his nieces, Elizabeth Tidwell (Patrick), Katherine Hendrickson (Joe), Ashley Santos (David), Brie Clark (Drew) and Jennifer Harris; and his cousins, Phillip Vaughn and Wayne Vaughn.
