He was predeceased by: his wife Shelby Jean Abney; his parents, Eugene Abney and Mildred Abney; his siblings, Terry Abney, Billie Jean Patterson and Martha Fay Armstrong; his nephew Steve Peterson; and his close friend Joyce Campbell.

He is survived by: his son Michael Abney; his daughter-in-law Jana; his grandchildren, Michael Andrew Abney, Ethan Kendric Abney, Sara Katherine Abney and Sadie Claire Abney; and his great grandchild Lex Oliver Abney.
