Melba Phillips Obituary

Melba Phillips, born on October 6, 1934 in Kinston, Alabama, passed away on October 22, 2026. Melba leaves behind family members and others who acknowledge this loss. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Matthew Free and Ester Free; her former husband Bill Bush; her husband Earl Phillips; her son-in-law Walt Staggs; and her siblings, Edward Free, Joe Free, Francis Free, Jean Yarbrough, Doyle Free, Lamar Free and Kenneth Free.

She is survived by: her children, Genny Bush Staggs of Lower Alabama, Greg Phillips (Maureen) of Lower Alabama, Ken Phillips (Sonia) of Lower Alabama, April Penney (Kelley) of Lower Alabama and Wes Phillips (Amanda) of Lower Alabama; and her brother Boyd Free. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Wednesday, November 4th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Bay Minette (1201 Hand Ave, Bay Minette, AL 36507). A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 4th 2026 at 12:00 PM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1628, Bay Minette, AL 36507.
