He was predeceased by: his parents, Claude Stephens and Edith Stephens; his wife Carol Ann Espy Stephens; his daughter Doris Lynn Stephens; and his siblings, Leo (Ruth), Robert (Dot), Howard (Sue Ann), Donald (Delores), Flora, Dorothy Pinkerton (Charles), Betty Knowles (Kermit), Helen Cullen (Steve), Edith Pascual (John) and Mary Walsh (Charles).
He is survived by: his daughter Sandi Stephens Simmons (Clay); his grandchildren, Kelly Roper (Jim), Megan Cobb (Trevor), Heath Simmons (Andrea), Rachel Simmons, Laura Simmons (Ben) and David Simmons; his great grandchildren, Kaelynn, McKenna Whitworth, Selah, Sadie, Joshua Cobb, Drew, Karina, Gabby, Elena Simmons, Baela, Kelton Strong and Gaia Hilton; and his sisters, Nancy Welborn (Billy) and Norma Baymiller (Dick). He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 23rd 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Maple Hill Cemetery (202 Maple Hill St SE, Huntsville, AL 35801). Visitation was held on Wednesday, September 23rd 2026 at 2:30 PM at the same location. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, September 23rd 2026 at 3:00 PM at the River Chapel (3605 Ratliff Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Samford University, where his granddaughter Kaelynn Whitworth is a freshman, or to Converse College, where his daughter, Lynn Stephens, attended until her death in 1977.
