With sadness, we share the passing of Derek E. Smiley J. D. of Birmingham, Alabama. Derek, born on July 20, 1960, passed away on October 2, 2026. Family and friends are welcome to send flowers or leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
Family, friends, and acquaintances remember Derek for his warmth, thoughtfulness, and the moments shared together. While he will be deeply missed, the influence he had on the lives around him remains. Loved ones will reflect on the time spent together. He was predeceased by: his parents, Percy Smiley Sr. (Dorothy Smiley) and Dorothy Smiley; and his brother Marvin Smiley. He is survived by: his daughter Devan (Jeffrey); his siblings, Barbara and Percy Jr.; and his grandchildren, Carsyn, Caleb and Jireh. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at the Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (2135 Jefferson Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211). A burial will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 from 1:00 PM to 1:15 PM at the Elmwood Cemetery (600 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive S. W., Birmingham, AL 35211).
