He was predeceased by: his parents, Lee Melvin Neaves and Naomi McMahan Neaves; his wife Loretta Gambrell Neaves; his son James Lee Neaves, Jr.; and his grandson Jimmy Allen Simmons, Jr..
He is survived by: his children, Geneva Hollis of Calera, Patricia Poole (Brian) of Calera, Janet Hagerla (Randy) of Columbiana, Jeffery Neaves of Calera and Danny Neaves (Laura) of Thorsby; his grandchildren, Holly Criss, Misty Martinez (Kevin), Elizabeth Edwards, Thomas Hollis, Natalie Neaves and Ella Kate Neaves; and his siblings, Gerald Neaves (Mary) of Pinson and Brenda Cooper of Birmingham. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to The Lighthouse Church.
