He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Bates Abernathy; his sons, Billy Ray Abernathy (Betty Ann) and Toby Gwin Abernathy; his sister Virginia "Dener" Slayton; his brothers-in-law, Tommy Bates and A. J. Corbin; and his grandchildren, Allison Graham (Aaron), Brooklyn Barnes (Timothy), Jamie Abernathy, Tyler Abernathy and Cheltzey Clements (Nick). He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.
