He was predeceased by: his parents, Otis Varden and Lurlene Varden; and his siblings, Renfroe Varden, Otis Varden, Jr., George Varden and Shirley Smitherman.

He is survived by: his wife Janice Ratliff Varden; his children, Shane Varden (Lisa), Denice Holloway and Wendy Melton; his grandchildren, Madison Melton, Andrew Varden and Alex Varden; and his siblings, Wallace Varden, Helen Varden, Doris Maddox, Betty Hughes (Jim) and Kathy Tracy (Jackie).
