He was predeceased by: his parents, Jess Abernathy and Ava Lou Abernathy; and his siblings, Wanda, Brenda, Gayle, Jewel, Ed, Lenward and Clifford.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Jo Abernathy; his children, Karen Mitchell and Bobby Abernathy (Janet); and his siblings, Richard Abernathy (Sue) and Nadean Bryant. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
