He was predeceased by: his siblings, William "Bill" Bates, Grady Bates, Jack Bates, Thad Bates, Terry Bates, Myrtle Hendrix, Dorothy Hancock and Viva Johnson; and his parents, Robert Lem and Mamie Pearl Trimble Bates.
He is survived by: his wife Janice Bates; his daughters, Cindy McSwain (Bobby) and Becky Faulk (Hayden); his grandchildren, Brooke Berg (Bill) and Brittany Tucker (Whitney); his great grandchildren, Olivia Yancy, Audrey Tucker, Caroline Berg, Anna Kate Berg and William Berg; and his brother Frank Bates of Texas.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 28th 2026 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Moss-Service Funeral Home (1901 2nd Ave NW, Cullman, AL 35055). A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, October 29th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the same location.
