He was predeceased by: his parents, Eugene Jackson Chenault and Mildred Maples Chenault. He is survived by: his wife Carol; his sons, Christopher Randle Payne of Nashville and Jason Payne of Decatur; and his brother Stephen Maples Chenault of Florence. He is also survived by three granddaughters.

A reception will be held on Saturday, July 26th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the St. John's Episcopal Church (202 Gordon Dr SE, Decatur, AL 35601). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 26th 2025 at the same location.
