He was predeceased by: his wife Virginia Hall Smith. He is survived by: his children, Jennifer Smith White and Robert Martin Smith, Jr.; his grandchildren, Hannah Reed, Brigit Smith, Marshall Wright and Kaitie Smith; and his great grandchildren, Victoria Reed and James Reed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Baptist Convention of New England.
