She was predeceased by : her parents, Dr. John Steen and Noreen Steen; her husband William S. Smith; and her sister Sharmon Davis. She is survived by : her sons, Bradley DeGroote (Genna) and Gregory DeGroote; her nieces, Brooke Davis and Marna Davis; and her grandchildren, Anna DeGroote, Parker DeGroote and Amy DeGroote.

Even in the end stages of a long battle with Alzheimer's, she had a smile and a kind word for everyone.
