He was predeceased by: his son Robert Lee Hargett; his parents, E. E. Hargett and Lola Hargett; and his brothers, Bobby Hargett (Anne) and Billy Hargett.

He is survived by: his wife Nena Mills Hargett; his children, Randy Hargett (Amy), Nina Sherrod (Jon) and David Hargett (Cara); his sister-in-law Sheila Hargett; his friend Regina Crosslin; his grandchildren, Haley Coffell (Jared), Kelsey Michael (Nick), Krysten Richardson (Ben), Brandon Sherrod, Alissa Flowers (John David), Jonathan Sherrod (Morgan Jayde), Ashley Hargett, Lauren Dixon (Jabri), Nena August (Ben) and Abbie Hargett; and his great grandchildren, Robert, Kathryn, Isaiah, John Luke, Gabriel (GB), James, Audrey, Shiloh, Billie, Micah, Anabelle, Brooks and Ruth.
