He was predeceased by : his parents, John Durwood Smith and Eva Louise Easterling Smith; his stepfather Joseph F. Lewis; his daughter Nena Keup; his brothers, Joe Lewis and Freddie Lewis; and his brother-in-law Jerry Hannah.

He is survived by : his children, Camilla Croston, Patricia Spence (Sam), Durwood Lamar Smith, Jr. and Dusty Smith; and his siblings, Patricia Hannah, Linda Phillips (Larry) and Johnnie Smith (Peggy). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
