He is survived by: his children, Sharon Jo McKinley (Bob), Randy Darrell Messer (Beth) and David Lynn Messer (Di); his grandchildren, Kelcie McKinley Phillips (Jason), Robert Ryan McKinley (Lindsey), Erin Suzanne Breen (John), Kaine Matthew Messer (Ashley), David Lynn Messer II, Krista Michelle Messer-Li (Guy) and Caitlyn Christine Klingman (Derrick); and his great grandchildren, Jasper Emarose Ahmed, Noah Ahmed, McKinley Grace Phillips, Damon Leelynn Messer, Annie Elisabeth Phillips, Chloe Jean McKinley, Sophie Marie McKinley, Robert Hollis McKinley, Waverly Ann McKinley, Thomas Rowan McKinley, Hollis May Messer, Georgia Ann Klingman, Alyce Grace Klingman, Matthew Sumithra Messer-Li and Parker Kelly Messer.

A burial will be held on Monday, July 21st 2025 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery (34904 AL-225, Spanish Fort, AL 36527). Visitation will be held on Monday, July 21st 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at 17263 Fort Morgan Road, Gulf Shores, AL 36542. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 21st 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the same location.
