He was predeceased by : his son James D. Smith Jr.; his parents, Cecil Smith and Maggie Smith; and his siblings, Nolan and Cordell.

He is survived by : his wife Frances S. Smith; his daughter Deborah Isbell (Rickey); and his grandsons, Darrin Isbell (Natasha) and Rusty Isbell (Kristy). He is also survived by 7 Great Grandchildren.
