He was predeceased by: his son-in-law Brent Petty; and his parents, Ira Sherrell and Nettie Tuck Sherrell. He is survived by: his wife Betty Jo Doty Sherrell; his children, Dianne Lewis (Wayne), Cindy Petty and Greg Sherrell (Laurie); and his siblings, Nell Landers and David Sherrell. He is also survived by six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
